From the 1st of April, 2010, most supermarkets in Matsue will charge plastic bags. There are more cities and towns that are working on reducing the bags, often thrown away after used only once.

In Izumo, shops started to charge bags last July.
In Hamada, 'Bring your own bag Campaign' has been on.
In Okinoshima-cho, every 10th of the month is 'No plastic bags Day.'
