After World War II all the delegates of U.N.O.
gathered at San Francisco to discuss the destruction
caused by the Japanese Army, Navy, and Air Force
to the neighbouring countries, including Sri Lanka.
Many countries claimed for compensations. Mr J.R.
Jayawardana, then Finance Minister of Sri Lanka
who attended as delegate to this conference, said
the following Gatha in Pali language.
NAHIVERANA VERANEE SAMMANTHEEDA KUDACHANANAN
AVERANACHA SAMMANATHI ESA DHAMMO SANANTHANO
meaning
HATRED CAN NOT BE APPEASED BY HATRED
HATRED CAN BE OVERCOME WITH BENEVOLENCE.
And he said,
"This is a Universal Truth, so let us try
to overcome hatred with benevolence and make this
world a better place for you and me and for the
entire human race."
Then all the delegates changed their minds and
supported this proposal to help Japan without claiming
compensation.
