CHANGING PERSPECTIVES
 |
Next month, the underground bank vault in Matsue's
Kara Koro Kobo will open its colossal 20-inch-thick
steel doors, to everyone including VIP guests and
local school children.
A project that has been quietly composing itself,
under the direction of Paula Black, ALT of Shimane
Prefecture BOE, and her crew that make up the “Committee”,
will finally be ready for the public.
Paula conceived the idea of a great photo-exhibition
last summer, and has steadily been making this dream
a reality. Her committee, made up of talented translators,
designers, thinkers, and financial advisors, have
given her the support needed to make the project
an actuality.
The theme, “Shimane: Changing Perspectives” was
decided on the notion that we should try to open
the eyes of local Shimane folk with challenging
or new perspectives of the environment they live
within, using photography.
The project evolved to include not only photographs,
but to exhibit contemporary art as well. Sculptures,
fabrics and paintings will also be on display.
The invitation to artists was extended beyond the
JET community to incorporate other foreign residents
in Shimane. Officially there are 26 participants,
from a multitude of countries, scattered all over
Shimane.
During the course of the exhibition, whose hours
are 10am to 6pm, there will be personnel ready to
explain the works in both English, and Japanese.
A few members of the Committee will also be holding
lectures on subjects they are interested in (so
far, “Aboriginal Art”, and “French Fashion”are themes
that will be presented).
